We like this Shirley Temple recipe with just ginger ale, but some versions use lemon-lime soda, or a combination of ginger ale and lemon-lime soda. No matter what, don't forget the cherry!

Ingredients

  • Splash of grenadine

  • Ginger ale

  • 1 maraschino cherry

Recipe Preparation

  • Place grenadine in a Collins glass, fill with ice, and add ginger ale to fill glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

If you grew up drinking Shirley Temples (also known as "Kiddie Cocktails"), you're going to go crazy over this Jello poke cake recipe! Classic Shirley Temple Poke Cake combines the classic flavors (and ingredients) of a timeless treat with all of the taste of a moist poke cake recipe. Ribbons of cherry flavor give the cake its beautiful color and sweet taste while a bit of lemon and lime soda gives the cake a bit of extra flavor depth. You'll especially love the pieces of chopped cherries that are strewn throughout the cake. This dessert is a must-make!

Cooking Vessel Size 9 x 13-inch Baking Dish

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 / 4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 jar maraschino cherries, drained and chopped, juice reserved
  • A bottle of ginger ale, chilled
  • 1 (3-ounce) box cherry Jell-O mix
  • 1 (12-ounce) container of whipped vanilla frosting

Instructions

Heat oven according to the instructions on the box of cake mix. Lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.

Prepare the cake batter according to the instructions on the package, using the eggs and oil listed above. Substitute the water called for on the box of cake mix with a mixture of the reserved cherry juice (about 1/3 cup) supplement the cherry juice with the chilled ginger ale to get the amount of water required on the box.

Fold the cherries into the cake batter. Bake the cake according to the instructions on the package. The cake is done when a wooden skewer, inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Let the cake cool completely. Using the bottom end of the handle of a wooden spoon, poke holes all over the cake.

Prepare the Jell-O. In a large measuring cup, add 1 cup of boiling water to the Jell-O powder and mix for 2 minutes, until the powder is dissolved. Add 1 cup of cold ginger ale to the mixture and mix until blended (about 2 minutes).

Pour the Jell-O mixture over the top of the cake.

Spread the whipped frosting over the cake.

Shirley Temple

The Shirley Temple is probably the most famous mocktail ever. This classic mix of ginger ale and grenadine with a squeeze of lemon or lime topped with maraschino cherries is believed to be the world’s first mocktail. And it’s still alive and well today.

The drink is named for Shirley Temple, the child actress, singer and dancer who starred in many movies and television shows during the 1930s and ’40s and later become a U.S. diplomat and ambassador. It’s possible the drink debuted at the Brown Derby restaurant in Los Angeles—a claim made by Ms. Temple herself—although other establishments also lay claim to its provenance.

Often viewed as a child’s drink, the Shirley Temple is a popular choice for anyone seeking a tasty nonalcoholic beverage. That’s why the Shirley Temple is a fixture at bars, whether it’s on the official mocktail menu or simply made à la minute for a guest. Of course, like all drinks, the quality can vary. Make your Shirley Temple with cheap bottled grenadine, sweet-and-sour and neon-red maraschino cherries, and you’re bound to create a sickly sweet concoction that belongs squarely on the kid’s menu. But use homemade grenadine (an easy mixture of pomegranate juice and water), fresh citrus, and garnish it with high-quality cherries, and you’ll have a well-made example fit for discerning drinkers.

Over the years, bartenders have found ways to tweak the Shirley Temple recipe. Some replace the ginger ale with ginger syrup and club soda, while others skip the ginger entirely and opt for lemon-lime soda or lemonade. You can also make this mocktail a cocktail, often dubbed the Dirty Shirley, by dosing it with vodka or another spirit of your choice.

Regardless of which route you choose to go, the drink has staying power. It’s the familiarity and ease of order that are the keys to the Shirley Temple’s longevity. Ms. Temple herself, however, was not a fan of the drink, finding it too sweet. But perhaps even she would have enjoyed the popular elixir if she’d tried this recipe, which features DIY grenadine, fresh lime juice and good cherries.

The Shirley Temple grew up, and it’s even better as a margarita

This margarita is all about nostalgia &mdash and great flavors, of course.

The minute you taste this delicious margarita, it will bring back childhood memories of drinking a Shirley Temple. Even though this Shirley Temple is made for adults, it still comes with the classic maraschino cherries.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite things about enjoying a Shirley Temple was eating the cherry. And now that I’m a big kid, I still love the cherries, which is why I put extra in this margarita.

So when you’re feeling nostalgic, make yourself a Shirley Temple with a spiked twist to it, margarita style. And don’t forget to add extra cherries.

Shirley Temple Cake

Do you have a birthday party or baby shower coming up? Looking to serve something a little whimsical and nostalgic at the same time? Then look no further than this wonderful recipe based on one of our favorite treats from when we were kids: a Shirley Temple cake. Yes! The much-beloved cherry colored soda drink has been transformed into an amazingly pink, moist and delicious cake!

We all know that to make a Shirley Temple we need maraschino cherries and lemon-lime soda. Cherries help with color and flavor while, at least in the cake version, the soda bubbles help to keep the cake moist and delicious. A slightly pink cake pops out of the oven and cools completely before we top it with a pretty pink frosting. To serve, we add a dollop of whipped cream and of course top it off with a maraschino cherry. What a delightfully fun spin on one of our favorite childhood drinks.

We’d completely forgotten about this delicious non-alcoholic drink until we stumbled across this CAKE recipe and couldn’t believe how fun it sounded. A favorite soda drink turned into a fun cake sounds like the perfect treat for a baby shower or birthday party. It’s just the right amount of fun and nostalgia, served with a cherry on top!
