The Barn at Bedford Post Inn is Open, Campagna to Follow

Altamarea Group's culinary takeover of Richard Gere's Bedford Post Inn debuts September 15.

The Barn at Bedford Post Inn, with chef Michael White, executive chef PJ Calapa, chef de cuisine Devin Bozkaya and the Altamarea Group, officially opens for service today, September 15.

Originally purchased in 2007 by actor Richard Gere, the eighteenth-century barn and farmhouse has since undergone careful renovations; chef White confirmed in March that Altamarea group would take over the culinary direction of both the private event space (the Barn) and the inn’s restaurant (the Farmhouse).

The Barn’s eagerly anticipated reopening follows a fresh redesign of the interior, a new bar, and an expanded upstairs dining area.

The menu at The Barn, from the same team that brought you the Michelin-rated Marea and Ai Fiori, is dedicated to “casual country chic dining,” including highlights like locally sourced baked eggs, Cappelletti pasta, branzino, and chef White’s legendary White Label Burger.

Later this fall, the Farmhouse will reopen as Campagna, joining the Altamarea Group’s portfolio to serve more of the seasonal, upscale Italian cuisine that the group is known for.

    Bedford Post

Cuisine varies culturally and geographically but in every countryside people undoubtedly embrace what is local. Seasonal, indigenous ingredients picked at their prime are the most flavorful and when prepared simply, transport you to the place from which they came. This has always inspired me and also inspires our menu at The Barn.

The Grill, a New Outdoors Dining Destination, Opens at the Bedford Post Inn

A new al fresco dining destination called the Grill has bowed in at the Bedford Post Inn on a patio in back of the Barn. It is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 4 to 10 p.m., weather permitting, and offers a menu differing completely from the Barn's menu. The Barn has its own outside seating.

[The Barn and the Grill will be joined by a flagship Italian restaurant called "Campagna at the Bedford Post Inn," probably in late August, 2014. Campagna is Italian for Countryside.]

The Grill's menu has both small plates and large plates and includes grilled oysters with bacon mignonette and toasted ciabatta, soft-shell crab, and Maine lobster with herb butter and charred lemon. A Chocolate Hazelnut Budino with caramelized banana and burnt marshmallow appears on the dessert list.

The kitchen is under the direction of Chef Michael White.

"The Grill has outside dining only no reservations walk-in-only," Katherine Teodosic, General Manager for the restaurant complex, said. "Guests who make a reservation at the Barn can move to the Grill depending on space availability," she pointed out, "but the reservation doesn't guarantee a spot at the Grill."

"We will be watching the weather closely and will not open if there is an impending storm or rain shower," Teodosic said, "There are occasionally 'freak showers' in the summer time, and in that case, we will do our best to accomodate everyone under our overhang or in the Barn loft."

In 2007 Westchester residents Richard Gere and Carey Lowell refurbished Bedford Post Inn , an eight-room inn dating back to the 1860s. Situated in the center of tony Bedford, it offers daily yoga and has two restaurants on site: The Barn offers casual lunch and breakfast, while Campagna is a high-end dining experience where a meat-heavy menu is sprinkled with local ingredients. Rooms are tranquil and geared towards relaxation, with neutral hues, canopy beds, and working fireplaces—we recommend booking a room with a terrace overlooking the wooded grounds. With its rustic-chic vibe, the inn lures a cosmopolitan crowd who desires an upstate-style getaway without having to travel far.

Meanwhile, 19 miles south in White Plains, Westchester’s urban hub, is the The Ritz-Carlton New York, Westchester , a full-scale resort with 38 suites, a state-of-the-art business center, indoor rooftop pool, decadent spa program, and Laurent Tourondel’s BLT Steak. It has all the familiar trappings of a Ritz-Carlton property and, given its central location, different areas of Westchester County can be accessed with ease by both car and rail.

Carmel Valley Ranch’s Ginger Orange Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Ginger-Orange Glazed Sweet Potatoes from Ritchard Cariaga, Director of Culinary and F&B Operations . [+] at Carmel Valley Ranch.

Set on 500-acres in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains on California’s Central Coast, Carmel Valley Ranch’s Ginger-Orange Glazed Sweet Potatoes are a winning combination of flavors that are sure to delight this Thanksgiving. Available at the hotel’s signature restaurant Valley Kitchen, this recipe, conceived by Director of Culinary and Food and Beverage Operations Ritchard Cariaga is a solid Turkey day standby that packs a zesty punch.

    Roasted Sweet Potatoes

    • 3 medium sized sweet potatoes
    • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
    • 1 teaspoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
    • ½ inch piece of ginger, cut into chunks and smashed.
    • Toasted walnuts and goat cheese (optional)

Instructions: Start by preparing sweet potatoes, rinse and scrub the skin well. Place cleaned sweet potatoes on a double piece of foil drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Smash pieces of ginger to release oils and aroma, place along with the sweet potatoes. Wrap well and create a pouch, roast in a 350F oven for about 45 minutes to an hour or until fork tender. Remove from the wrapper and continue to roast until golden brown. Cut into serving pieces and drizzle with glaze and golden raisins. Optional to add toasted walnuts and goat cheese.

    Ginger-Orange Glaze

    • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
    • ½ cup vegetable stock or water
    • ½ tablespoon orange zest
    • 1 tablespoon organic honey
    • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
    • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
    • 2 tablespoon butter, keep cold
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions: In a saucepan, combine water, orange juice, honey and maple syrup. Use a micro plane to grate orange zest and ginger. Bring to a simmer and reduce halfway or until the liquid is lightly thickened. Meanwhile cut butter into small cubes. Remove sauce for heat and slowly whisk in cold butter until incorporated.

Garnishes: Caramelized Oranges, Fresh orange segments, Golden Raisins, Lemon Verbena, Fresh Parsley.

Heading north on the opposite banks of the Hudson River to Cold Spring, there’s Hudson House on the corner of West and Main streets.

Built in 1832, it has 13 guest rooms, so you can find a bit more anonymity than in a smaller inn, if that’s what you like. It offers two restaurants and private parties. It is a literally a stone’s throw from the river and just steps away from all the shopping Cold Spring is known for. Rates range from $170-$260 per night, depending on accommodations. 2 Main Street, Cold Spring, 845-265-9355,

Also in Cold Spring is the Pig Hill Inn at the corner of 73 Main St. where breakfast in bed is a sweet reality with nine rooms to choose from. The three-story brick building was built in 1825, and is filled with antiques and high- quality reproduction period pieces that are also for sale. 73 Main Street, Cold Spring, 845-265-9247,

What else is there to do: Shopping. Main Street is lined with cute stores, antique shops and bookstores. Check out Boscobel in nearby Garrison. A period house museum, it also has gorgeous gardens to tour, yoga on the lawn and an events schedule. To get there, hop the trolley, which costs a dime. The trolley runs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and makes stops at Boscobel. Dining out: Roundup Texas Barbecue: Former Texans Bill Villetto, Linda Vaughan and Roy Hammond's unassuming establishment has become a local mecca for smoked meats. Expect long-smoked beef brisket, meaty beef ribs, whole chickens and pork sausage. For sides, go with the ranch beans — a delicious Texas-style take on baked beans that incorporates a healthy dose of chilies and garlic. Go: 2741 Route 9, Cold Spring, 845-809-5557,

Here's Everything That Went Down At Blake Lively’s Super Chill Baby Shower

NEW YORK, NY - JULY 13: Blake Lively attends the New York premiere of 'Cafe Society' hosted by Amazon & Lionsgate with The Cinema Society at Paris Theatre on July 13, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by James Devaney/WireImage) WireImage

Guys, Blake Lively is chill AF. Not only did the pregnant actress get down with Taylor Swift and her squad on the Fourth of July, but she also just threw what might be the chillest baby shower ever. Lively gathered her friends to celebrate the upcoming arrival of her second child and her 29th birthday. Twice the celebration, twice the fun—and all the chill. What could be better?

Didn't get your invitation to Lively's get-together? Yeah, same. That's because the actress kept things small for her baby-and-birthday celebration. Singer Taylor Swift flew all the way from jury duty in Nashville to be in New York with Lively on her big day. And actress Amber Tamblyn—who starred in the classic movie Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants with Lively—made an appearance, as well. Lively's husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, wasn't able to be there, but he paid tribute to his wife with a clever birthday tweet.

Lively understands the importance of a good brunch—that's why she hosted her gathering at New York area eatery Campagna & The Barn. The Italian restaurant is located at the Bedford Post Inn, and boasts mouth-watering dishes like avocado toast served with an egg white scramble and Dutch pancakes covered in caramel apples and candied pecans. "It was a very simple and classy brunch with friends catching up," a friend of Lively's told Us Weekly.

After the brunch wrapped up, the crew headed to their second and final destination: Lively and Reynolds' nearby home. The friends reportedly spent hours hanging out and celebrating both exciting events in Lively's life. Ugh, could it get any better than that?

TBH, the whole thing sounds incredible. Friends, brunch, and a generally relaxing day—let's just say I'll be taking a page out of Lively's playbook when it comes time to plan a baby shower/birthday party for myself.

    Congratulations, and happy birthday Lively!

Bedford Post Inn: Richard Gere’s Upstate New York Retreat

Yet these days, longtime Westchester resident, actor Richard Gere, is the one getting all the attention. He and his wife, Carey Lowell, restored an 18th century stone building connected to a barn into the Bedford Post Inn, an elegant eight-room luxury hotel with two well-loved restaurants.

→ 1. Richard Gere Carey Lowell and friends. → 2. Richard Gere Carey Lowell.

Before they became innkeepers, the couple would ride their horses by the dilapidated building. Despite its rundown appearance there was something about it that charmed them. When it went up for sale, they both felt a responsibility to bring it back to life. “It was such a melancholy feeling to watch this piece of history just fall apart,” said Gere, “and so I thought, wouldn’t it be great to open a fantastic, casual hotel and restaurant there, someplace we could ride to?”

Today, well after the transformation, Bedford Post Inn holds the honor of being on the Relais & Chateaux’s list of 518 worldwide properties that symbolize hotel and restaurant excellence. Designed with a charming coziness by Lowell and designer Tiffany Vassilakis, all the rooms are prepared with Frette linens and towels, and botanical bath products exclusively formulated for guests by Greek skincare line, Sponge. Most rooms have a working fireplace, a handmade antique claw-foot tub imported from Portugal, and opens up to a terrace that overlooks the wooded grounds.

    → 1. Main Entrance. → 2. Exterior. → 3. Guest room.

Gere, a peace activist and practicing Buddhist, has also made sure your stay at the inn includes some mind, body and spirit renewal. Each guest receives a complimentary pass to the popular Yoga Loft that offers an array of classes, including Vinyasa, Hatha, Anusara, Iyengar and Kundalini yoga. It also holds meditation classes and enrichment workshops that range from alternative medicine to Kabbalah. “There are a lot of people in this area who have been enormously successful and have done tremendous good work. It’s my hope that they will come and discuss and network at a very high level about how to have a positive impact on the planet,” says Gere. He and his partners have created what many feel is a truly sacred space where people have come together for fundraisers, guest speakers and even Tibetan monks.

    Bedford Post Inn

Bedford Post Inn also provides you with two distinct restaurants. The Barn has a more casual atmosphere and serves delectable dishes of farm to table vegetables, seafood and even the local favorite hamburger. For a more formal dining experience, The Farmhouse, offers a la carte options as well a chef’s tasting menu. A first rate wine list and the culinary expertise of Chef Jeremy McMillan has made having a reservation a must.

    → 1. Restaurant. → 2. Chef Jeremy McMillan. → 3. The Farmhouse Restaurant.

For guests wanting to explore outside of Bedford Post, there are horses for trail riding or hiking nearby in Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. You can also take a short train trip to the picturesque town of New Canaan, or go antique hunting in Hudson.

As a weekend stay or longer, Bedford Post Inn will absolutely slow you down to a leisurely pace, because as Gere best described it: “The idea is to leave the world behind.” ■
